Chapter 15:

THE BODIES OF OUR SOULS

The sun began to peep above the den as I carried the egg through the forest. I remembered the place where Ismera and her sons kept their books and artifacts for studying. I knew that there had to be a bag of some sort among their collectibles. I still wasn’t sure if Ismera wanted me to carry the egg away from its hideout, but I was sure that I was not going to leave it in the study. If my father and Draces came back, which I’m sure they would, they would search for the egg even if it meant tearing the whole place down. This egg must have been that special if people were still looking for it.

When I finally made my way through the brush, the study area had been destroyed as well. The books were ripped and thrown into pieces, the globe was broken in two, and the tables had been dismantled. I sighed as I walked over to the rubble, swaying my arms to look for a carrying item. Most of the debris were wood and papers with no sign of a bag. I continued my search, nevertheless, hoping to find it somewhere.

I made my way to the end of the clearing where a half of the globe had been. With it were some sacks and pieces of portraits thrown in a semi-circle. My arms dragged as I reached the items, gently laying the egg on the ground. It sagged to one side as I lifted the sacks, trying to find one that I could use to carry the egg. Most of them were torn to shreds, but the last sack I looked at had two straps for me to put on my shoulders. It was even large enough to put the egg in! What luck!

I turned around to the black crystal, lifting it up into the sack, trying to make sure that I wouldn’t break it. I placed it gently in the bag, letting the sack close over the egg and swung it over my shoulder. Unfortunately, the pain on my shoulders increased, but the sack made it easier for me to carry the egg.

Now, all I had to do was find Ocar before he did something he would regret. By the look in his eyes, he would run after my father and get himself killed. Revenge is what I wanted too but not at the cost of any more lives.

I closed my eyes once more, envisioning the Trusis Mountains. The Srean River had to be close to where the battle took place. Its glimmering waters were like crystals in the night sky, the only sign of hope left in these mountains.

“Take me to the Srean River 33!” I stated in Arean.

There was a jolt in my back. I did not know whether it was from the egg or from my chant, but I was thrust away from Opendin and straight into the Srean River. And when I mean straight, I mean face first.
